What next after smart metering?
The basic purpose to promote smart metering technology is to empower utilities to address various issues/concerns and improve their operational efficiency. Smart metering is a TOOL and the data collected need to be used effectively. Only by leveraging the gain from the smart metering system data, the project investment is justified. Obvious Next step after smart metering is to leverage benefits and ensuring drastic improvement in operational efficiency.
In the recent past, to improve the operational efficiency of the Distribution Companies and to provide better cost effective services to consumers, Power Distribution Sector worldwide is rapidly adopting the Smart Metering Technology. This technology is futuristic and helps Distribution Companies in effective distribution operations as well as help utilities in managing dynamic and disruptive changes happening in the grids due to solar energy infusion, Home Automation, Electric Vehicles, Storage, etc. In India, itself, there are around 360 million consumers and smart metering adoption is in initial stage. Such a link is a fundamental requirement of a Modern Grid.
